Cherry Tree Design:
Shoji Goes Eco-Conscious Underground

Homeowners of an energy efficient house on the coast wanted to expand their home by adding a second story addition. Originally built in 1978, three of the four sides, as well as the roof, were underground, where temperatures are moderated.
The south side was built with an insulated glass façade that heats the interior in the winter when the sun is low in the southern sky. Because the house is surrounded by salt marsh wetlands, the owners could only build on the existing footprint. Therefore, they chose to add a second story to expand their space.

The second story addition was designed with an eclectic Asian influence, so Cherry Tree Design shoji was a perfect solution for dividing the master bedroom and bath.  Architect Bill Lee says, “My plan was to try to capitalize on all the great features the location offered including sun, views and private spaces while creating something special for this site.”

Architect Lee came across shoji made by Cherry Tree Design and thought it would be a perfect fit. He says, “I wanted an elegant easy-to-use product that would complement the Asian aesthetic.” He incorporated the product into the architectural plans and the owner approved.

The twelve-foot, four panel shoji screen was installed between the master bedroom and bath to create a clean division of space, without having to erect a wall. The panels were constructed of natural Maple hardwood with a contemporary grid pattern and 1 millimeter Jet Stream Encapsulated facing. Cherry Tree Design shoji consultant Bev Piette says, “The floor track was a Maple double track that was let in to the finished floor for a beautiful transition between their wood and tile floorings. The doors are on a double track, which allows the doors to open in the center for a nice two-panel width opening.”

Owner Brian Sullivan says, “Our architect pointed us toward Cherry Tree Design. This is the first time I have used Cherry Tree Design, but I would definitely use their products again in the future.”

“I really like the quality joinery, finish and product design,” says Mr. Sullivan. “It’s a beautiful product with good installation instructions. The shoji screens operate perfectly and look great. They fit perfectly with the overall look of the house.”

Mr. Lee adds, “The owners are very happy with the result. I would specify Cherry Tree products again.”
